Fortuantely, there’s a solution: install Realtek’s gigabit NIC driver for *BSD manually. Happy New Year!ĮDIT (): We recently upgraded to Gigabit FIOS, and the driver for the Realtek NIC inside the Intel NUC BOX6CAYH would crash periodically when it experienced sustained, relatively high (200Mbps+) throughput – the message I saw in the kernel logs was something like re0: watchdog timeout. I am using totally different subnet(s) in my pfSense configuration.EDIT (): Here’s a link to forum thread with a newer/updated version of the Realtek Gigabit NIC driver mentioned below, which you’ll need if you’re running a recent version of pfSense. I'll monitor that once I have this core issue resolved and adjust accordingly if needed.

It's very likely something stupid simple that I'm not - thanks for your tips!

  • Next step is to reset my 5100 to factory default and manually reconfigure it (versus importing a backup) and see if that resolves the issue.
  • I swapped my Netgate 5100 out with an old Netgate 1100 (after upgrading it to v21.02) and the issue goes away and I get roughly synchronous throughput (but not much as with the 5100, like around 550 Mbps up/down).
  • To that point (and back to the original problem addressed in this post), I narrowed down the issue by bypassing my managed switch and connected the hosts in question directly to my Netgate 5100 (running v21.02) and got the same results.īut that problem doesn't exist if I swap the WAN back to my Spectrum cable modem. With regards to which appliance to choose, for a 1 Gbps WAN, I'd recommend the 4100 at a minimum, if you've got the budget, splurge for the 6100 so you have room to grow to 2- or 3-Gbps WAN, or if you start to make use of a lot of processor-intensive packages (Snort, Suricata, Squid, SquidGuard, etc.). It is the absolute best way to support the pfSense project as their developers are responsible for over 85% of the upstream contributions to pfSense (in addition to a handful of other important OSS projects).

I salute your choice for buying a Netgate router.
